In 1953, brothers Nicholas
and Stephan Leonoudakis opened their first parking lot in the area of the city
now known as the Embarcadero Center. With determination and long hours, that
first parking lot began to generate revenue. Once the success of that first
lot took hold, the brothers were in full pursuit of a dream – Turning under-utilized
properties into safe, efficient and profitable parking facilities.
As the business grew, so did the level of expertise and the size of the projects undertaken. During the fifties and sixties, City Park’s reputation for entrepreneurial and creative solutions became well known. In fact, City Park’s reputation grew so much that during this period, the City of San Francisco, the Country of San Francisco and the California Department of Transportation all turned to City Park to help solve the serious parking problems associated with the explosive growth of car owners and the city.
Beginning in 1960 when the San Francisco Giants moved in, City Park was contracted to handle the parking for over 18,000 cars in a four-hour window at Candlestick Park. Eleven years later, City Park was also awarded Candlestick parking for the San Francisco 49ers.
More recently in 1994, the City of San Francisco partnered with City Park to remodel the Fifth and Mission Garage, resulting in a new state-of-the-art facility and a revenue increase of over 20%. Similarly, City Park dramatically increased revenues at Union Square when we introduced the pioneering concept of parking the vehicles of guests at surrounding hotels.
Now, a second generation has taken the helm at City Park. This transition, many years in the making, has been carefully planned and executed to ensure that our business – and our commitment to our customers – continues to grow. Although these new leaders have advanced degrees and world-class business acumen, each of them has also spent time parking cars and tending lots – earning first-hand experience in all aspects of the business. Each of them takes pride in the ownership of a family business, and each of them is dedicated to continuing the traditions of integrity and trust their predecessors have built.
Today, we are confident that City Park’s 55-year history is only a beginning, and that the future holds even more success and growth.
We encourage you to watch some clips from our company video to fully appreciate the story of the remarkable family who created City Park.
